Co-op Values

We are registered as a Co-operative Society and we are guided by the co-operative principles set out by the International Co-operative Alliance:

Voluntary & Open Membership

Our co-op is owned by it's members and steered by a voluntary board of directors. Anyone can become a member.

Democratic Member Control

We run on a 1 member 1 vote policy, so someone who has invested £100 has the same rights as someone who has invested £1000.

Economic Participation

Our schools purchase the electricity produced by the solar panels at a favourable rate.

Autonomy & Independence

We are autonomous, operating as an independent businesses under the control of our members and a board elected by its members. We are supported by community energy specialists Energy4All, but we are an independent organisation.

Education, Training & Information

We work with our schools and local community groups to maximise the environmental, educational and community impact of the solar installations. The solar panels can be a resource for education, leading to bigger impacts than their renewable generation alone.

Co-operation Among Co-operatives

Because The Schools' Energy Co-op has many years of experience in the sector, we can support other community energy groups to scale up their ambitions. We have partnered with other community energy groups like Salisbury Community Energy to complete more impactful projects.

Concern For Community

Community ownership of renewable energy generation enables people to come together to make a tangible contribution to the fight against climate change. Ordinary people can benefit financially, and in the case of the Schools' Energy Co-op they are also supporting local schools, a key part of the community.
